As you might have already seen from a previous blog post, I spent some time in Rome this Summer. You thought those photos were good? Well, that was only Part I. I have MORE! It really is one of those cities that you simply can’t put your camera down for. If you do, you’re more than likely going to miss something. Don’t worry, I’m not suggesting you should live your life through a glass lense and miss the beauty of the present moment. However, if you’ve always dreamed of visiting Rome, then like me, instead of gazing at glossy photos in books at the magnificence of this city and the art, you’ll want to snap your own photos. I don’t imagine mine will be anywhere near as impressive as those in books but, at least they’ll be mine 🙂
So without further ado, here is a rather large handful/armful of beautiful photos from Roma! A little fashion, a lot of art and SO much food…
VILLA BORGHESE GARDENS (website here)
BORGHESE GALLERY (website here)
It has been an absolute dream of mine to see visit this gallery as it’s home to some of the most treasured works by the likes of Bernini, Caravaggio and Raphael. If like me, you decided to visit just one art museum on your Rome city break, this is the one trust me! Being an ex Art History student I am going to do my very best NOT to give you a detailed history lesson but I’ll let the works speak for themselves, let the photos do all of the talking. It was simply amazing to see them all as text books really don’t do them any justice.
Thankfully, you’re allowed to take your cameras in and take as many photos as you like.
Just, remember… no flashing, It’s really frowned upon. No! Not THAT kind of flashing, I meant with your camera of course. However, now we’re on the topic let’s just rule out all types of flashing just to be safe huh…
VENUS VICTRIX BY ANTONIO CANOVA
DAVID BY BERNINI
(one of my absolute favourite pieces of sculpture. Just look at those eyes….)
APOLLO & DAPHNE BY BERNINI
THE RAPE OF PROSERPINA BY BERNINI
Oops, just trying to umm…re-focus the camera…
SELF-PORTRAIT AS BACCHUS BY CARAVAGGIO
BOY WITH A BASKET OF FRUIT BY CARAVAGGIO
As you exit the Borghese and turn right, a few meters is Bioparco Di Roma (Rome Zoo). I wish I could recommend this to visit. We went and I was incredibly angry and upset at the state of the animals and left in a flurry of fury after just half an hour. Please read my article on the experience ‘Help For Hippos! Rome Zoo Has A Problem”.
Let’s move onto something a little nicer, like let’s say food?
CASINA VALADIER (website here)
After a long morning wandering and exploring the Borghese gardens, we stumbled across this absolute jewel ‘Casina Valadier’. I don’t want to confess that it was the red carpet that lured me in but….well, yes it was the red carpet that lured me. A red carpet, combined with my thundering hunger and I was ready to welcome this oasis from the blistering 35 degree heat.
Thank you for having a little read of my ‘When In Rome II’.
Stop by The Blonde Tonic any time 🙂
Lots of Love
